Even though it's a humorous animation, it's advised against identifying with the characters if you haven't read the manga previously. Every character will enchant you with their own personalities. The anime centers on Kamado Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko and is set in various locations in 1912 Japan. Both the anime and the manga introduce us to a variety of characters with unique breathing techniques—breaths that humans developed to combat demons that prey on innocent people.

The water pillar, Tomioka Giyu, a cold-tempered yet attractive kid, is the source of our knowledge that the water is the breath of the water (the pillars are the ones of high rank among all the home demons).

The second pillar we got to meet is Shinobu Kocho, also known as the pillar of insects. She is one of the few pillars who cannot cut the heads of the demons; instead, she uses a katana with a slight tip that injects poison into the demons, causing them to die painfully. She has a cold attitude and doesn't mince words.

The next breath we are familiar with is the breath of fire, which is made known by the pillar Kyojuro Rengoku. He is a gregarious figure with a distinct demeanor who, as he puts it, "breathes warm with people."

The breath that comes next is the breath of sound, which we are aware of because of the pillar Tengen Uzui. He has a flashy appearance and an arrogant manner similar to Rengoku, yet he also gets along with others and is prepared to put his life in danger to save them.

Kamado Tanjiro, who learned how to do both the water breath and the sun dance from her parents, is the heir of this breath.
